The New York Yankees appear to be making a surprising Ryan Weathers decision.

The New York Yankees are trying to add bullpen help before the MLB trade deadline, and up until this point, they've had no luck.

The Yankees also just watched as Calen Kilian and Brooks Raley were both dealt while they were sitting on the sidelines.

New York seems focused on the San Diego Padres, particularly zeroing in on left-handed reliever Adrian Morejon.

Morejon made the All-Star team in 2025 and is having another strong year in 2026, owning a 3.00 ERA and 2.36 FIP while averaging 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

A report surfaced on Sunday night that the Yankees actually offered Will Warren to the Padres in exchange for Morejon, but San Diego rejected the deal.

Brendan Kuty and Dennis Lin of The Athletic have reported that that isn't true and that New York never even made such an offer to the Friars.

Who knows.

But Kuty and Lin also revealed another intriguing nugget of information: the Padres seem more interested in Ryan Weathers (who began his career with San Diego), but the Yanks seem rather inclined to retain the southpaw.

"So far, Weathers (4-7, 3.99 ERA, 21 starts) has performed slightly better than Warren (8-5, 4.14 ERA, 22 games, 21 starts). The Yankees also could be inclined to keep Weathers over Warren considering they traded a package of four prospects to the Miami Marlins to acquire him last offseason," Kuty and Lin wrote. "Weathers, a former Padre, is another potential target for San Diego, per league sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing deliberations."

Weathers' consistency has been a big issue for the Yankees this season, but he is averaging 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings and has looked dominant at times.

The general consensus has always been that Weathers will move to the bullpen once Carlos Rodon returns, but perhaps New York actually values Weathers a bit more than Warren? It should be noted, however, that Warren tossed six shutout innings against the Chicago Cubs in his most recent start.

Warren is a former top prospect of the Yankees who hasn't quite materialized like New York had hoped, so maybe the Yanks really would rather move him than Weathers.

Or maybe they'll move neither and it will actually be Warren who ends up in the pen.

Whatever the case may be, the Yankees need to make another move by the 6 p.m. cutoff on Monday evening. They did acquire slugger Luis Garcia Jr. from the Washington Nationals on Sunday, but they absolutely must bring in another relief pitcher.
