The New York Yankees must do whatever they can to acquire this one player.
The New York Yankees absolutely need to make some changes this offseason, because what they've been doing has not been working.
They should be long tired of seeing former AL East bottom dwellers like the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays celebrate at Yankee Stadium.
It's time for the Yankees to take serious action, and one player they should already be targeting heading into MLB free agency is second baseman Luis Arraez.
New York played out 2026 with Jazz Chisholm at second base, and we know how that went. Chisholm struggled all season long and never really went on one of his patented hot streaks. He also rubbed the fans the wrong way throughout the process.
But Arraez would represent a massive upgrade and is exactly what this offense needs.
A three-time batting champion, Arraez brings a contact-oriented approach that would mesh incredibly well in a lineup teeming with powerful sluggers.
Arraez would be a perfect table-setter for Aaron Judge, Ben Rice and Giancarlo Stanton (assuming Stanton returns), and he would also provide the Yankees with a tremendous situational hitter.
The 30-year-old batted .310 and struck out just 28 times over 655 plate appearances this past season. In fact, he has fanned just 243 times across 4,188 career trips to the dish, good for a lifetime strikeout rate of just 5.8 percent.
He would represent a more than welcome addition to the Yankee lineup, and he is someone New York should pursue heavily once free agency opens.
Arraez also showed dramatic improvement defensively in 2026, and if we're being quite honest, he has never been as bad in the field as some would have you believe.
Of course, the Yankees' chances of signing Arraez will largely depend on price.
While there are some who feel the Venezuelan native might end up having to settle for another short-term deal this winter, there are others who believe Arraez could bag a contract worth in the neighborhood of $100 million.
If it ends up being the latter, it's hard to imagine New York splurging. The Yankees have been very careful with their spending of late, and Hal Steinbrenner didn't exactly assuage those concerns in his most recent press conference.
But let's say Arraez does ultimately end up having a skimpier market than some anticipate. Why would New York not be in on him?
Arraez is literally everything the Yankees need at the top of their order, and they would be foolish not to try and bring him into the fold.
