The New York Yankees need to make this major move before the MLB trade deadline.

The New York Yankees are in clear need of upgrades between now and the MLB trade deadline, and while catcher and the bullpen are the two most glaring areas of need, the Yankees are looking for help elsewhere, as well.

New York is seeking another starting pitcher with Max Fried and Carlos Rodon still working their way back from injuries, and it is also apparently searching for a middle infielder.

While Anthony Volpe seems like the obvious candidate to replace at shortstop, the Yankees may want to take a look at a more polarizing solution: finding a new second baseman to usurp Jazz Chisholm.

Chisholm is slated to hit free agency during the offseason, and he is slashing just .224/.302/.403 on the 2026 campaign.

The season has not gone according to plan for the 28-year-old, who entered the spring hoping to put together a 50-50 showing (which was never all that realistic).

So, could New York actually find an upgrade over Chisholm before Aug. 3?

It's certainly possible, and perhaps the most enticing potential option is San Francisco Giants star Luis Arraez.

Like Chisholm, Arraez is slated to hit free agency next winter, but conversely, he is actually worth extending on a multi-year contract.

The three-time batting champion is slashing .326/.366/.455 on the year, and he has struck out just 18 times over 416 plate appearances.

Arraez is the exact type of table-setter the Yankees need at the top of their lineup, and he has also been brilliant in the field this season, boasting a plus-10 OAA and plus-8 FRV.

The Giants are out of playoff contention, so the will almost certainly move him over the next couple of weeks, and while there may not be an immediate opening for Arraez in New York's lineup, the Yanks could create one.

And how? By shipping Chisholm elsewhere, perhaps to a fellow contending team in need of a power bat. That way, the Yankees can also recoup some of the prospect capital they would have to surrender in a potential Arraez deal.

Chisholm is not going to be back next season anyway. He is going to command too much money for what he is worth, and while going from Chisholm to Arraez would certainly be sacrificing some home-run power, the latter is obviously the far superior hitter.

There actually is a realistic scenario in which the Yankees could move Chisholm in an attempt to bring Arraez to the Bronx, but whether or not they will actually do so before the deadline remains to be seen.

One thing is for sure: this is a decision New York must strongly consider.
