Yankees Named Surprising Landing Spot For Free Agent Ace

The Yankees could look to make a big move this offseason.

The New York Yankees' 2026 season didn't play out the way that anyone would have liked, with the team being knocked out early again.

New York fell in the American League Division Series, ending the year on a sour note. But as the team moves forward into the offseason, there are real questions that the front office will have to answer.

Some have called for the Yankees to go all-in this offseason, with the team looking to avoid losing early in the playoffs again next season. But given that there is a likely lockout coming in a few weeks, the Yankees could elect to hold off on making any big moves until the financial implications are laid out clearly.

In a new article from MLB analyst Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report, the Yankees were named as a surprising landing spot for ace Freddy Peralta. Peralta will be one of the better free- agent pitchers on the market this season, and the Yankees could look to bolster the rotation this offseason.

The Yankees don't necessarily need another starting pitcher, with the team having a strong rotation for next season. New York already has Cam Schlittler, Max Fried, Gerrit Cole, and Carlos Rodón, with each player signed at least through the 2028 season.

But with Cole getting older, the Yankees could elect to make another move to add more depth to the team. New York hasn't won the World Series since 2009, and this franchise is desperate to get over the hump.

Peralta could be a good addition to the team, even if it's extremely unlikely at this point for New York. But the Yankees know him well from his time with the Tampa Bay Rays, and signing him would also weaken a rival.

After going to the Rays in a mid-season trade, Peralta completely turned his year around, and he is now set up well for a nice payday. With the New York Mets, Peralta struggled heavily, posting a 4.99 ERA over 22 starts, throwing 113.2 innings.

But with the Rays, the right-hander posted a 3.25 ERA over 10 starts, pitching 55.1 innings down the stretch of the season. And the veteran was even better for Tampa Bay in the playoffs, including against the Yankees in the ALDS.

Peralta made five appearances (four starts) in the playoffs for the Rays, posting a 2.95 ERA for the team. His outings helped the Rays make the World Series, and the Yankees may see him as a potential missing piece.
