The New York Yankees were on the wrong side of history in their sweep against the Rays.

The New York Yankees' 2026 season is now over, with the team being swept in the American League Division Series by the rival Tampa Bay Rays.

The series ended with a tough loss at home for the Yankees, seeing their loyal fans leave the building in disbelief. After the team took down the Boston Red Sox fairly easily in the wild-card series, there was real hope around this team entering the ALDS.

However, the Rays were just took much to overcome, and the Yankees will now enter into the offseason with a lot to figure out. Tampa Bay just exposed a lot for New York, and the team may need to go back to the drawing board.

Slugger Aaron Judge didn't play int he series due to injury, and New York clearly missed its leader in the lineup. The Yankees were confident coming into the series, but the offense again let them down in the playoffs.

But the sweep of the Yankees saw the historic franchise make some unfortunate history in the process. This marked only the second time that New York has ever been swept in a best-of-five series, with the last time coming in 1980.

New York also never led in the series at all, which told the story of the three games against the Rays. The Yankees and Rays were fairly even during the regular season, but when the lightest were brightest, Tampa Bay was able to make the timely plays to move on.

After the series, fans have started to call on the team to fire manager Aaron Boone, following another early playoff exit. But whether the front office decides to make the move remains one of the bigger questions of the offseason.

With the Yankees not having Judge in the series, Boone may be safe, but it's been a tough tenure for the manager. Boone has seen a lot of success in New York, but under his leadership, this team just hasn't been able to get the job done to win the World Series.

The last time that the Yankees won the World Series was in 2009, which has caused a lot of frustration among the fanbase. Patience has started to wear thin in New York, and the Yankees may need to make some big changes this coming offseason.

The Yankees have some solid young players on the roster, but this city demands excellence, and since 2009, that hasn't happened.
