Yankees Predicted to Land 35-Home Run Slugger in MLB Offseason

The New York Yankees are being projected to land a big power bat this MLB offseason.

The New York Yankees are smack dab in the middle of the MLB playoffs, so the offseason is not at the forefront of their minds right now.

However, that doesn't mean the Yankees aren't already thinking about potential plans.

One area in particular New York will need to figure out is second base, as Jazz Chisholm is slated to hit free agency.

The general consensus is that the Yankees won't be bringing Chisholm back after a very disappointing campaign in which he slashed .231/.312/.399 with 19 home runs and 55 RBI after promising a 50-50 showing heading into the year.

So who will New York put at second?

While Anthony Volpe is an obvious internal option, there will be some very intriguing second basemen available on the open market, and Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley has identified Brandon Lowe as a top candidate for the Bronx Bombers.

In fact, Buckley outright predicted the Yankees to sign Lowe, who is projected to receive a contract worth in the neighborhood of $20-25 million annually.

Lowe spent the 2026 campaign with the Pittsburgh Pirates and slashed .260/.331/.493 with 35 homers and 96 RBI over 656 plate appearances.

Additionally, while the slugger is not typically known for his fielding prowess, Lowe posted 13 defensive runs saved and 15 outs above average at second base this season.

There are some caveats when it comes to Lowe, however.

First of all, Lowe isn't exactly young. He is 32 years old, and given that the Yankees have largely been criticized for being too old as it is, he wouldn't expect facilitate a youth movement.

Second, in addition to his age, Lowe has a rather checkered injury history.

While the former third-round pick played in a career-high 150 games this year, Lowe has only appeared in 130 contests or more four times in nine big-league seasons. He played in under 100 games four times.

When healthy, Lowe is terrific. He is a two-time All-Star with impressive pop, and as a lefty bat in Yankee Stadium, he can do some serious damage.

Lowe has slugged over 30 long balls three times, including a career-high 39 with the Tampa Bay Rays back in 2021. He also owns a lifetime .810 OPS.

But whether or not the suddenly cost-conscious Yankees would be willing to take the plunge with an aging, injury-prone player with a questionable history defensively remains to be seen.

New York will face the Rays in the ALDS starting Saturday evening.
