Yankees' Spencer Jones Has One Glaring Hole That Must Be Fixed

We know that New York Yankees outfielder Spencer Jones strikes out. A lot. He fanned a ton in the minor leagues, and as expected, he is whiffing a whole lot in the bigs, as well.

Because Jones has tremendous power, good patience and the ability to hit to all fields, you live with it, but there is no question he must curb his strikeouts at least somewhat.

And in order to do that, he must lay off one pitch in particular: the high fastball.

At this point, I'm not sure why pitchers bother coming in low to Jones, because he is incredibly suscpetible to elevated heat.

Jones has a beautiful swing, but it's long, and it's violent, and it's amplified when pitches are high in the zone.

It's his rookie campaign, so he has plenty of time to fix the problem, and it may take an offseason full of work in order for him to do that. But it must be addressed.

Jones has otherworldly potential. It's not just his offense. He is also incredibly athletic, possessing the best sprint speed of any player currently on the Yankees roster. He also has the ability to play all three outfield positions, and he does so effectively, as well.

But if Jones is unable to rectify his glaring Achilles heel, he's never going to take off like everyone is hoping.

Personally, I am a big fan of Jones, and I think he should get regular playing time the rest of the way. It will get complicated once Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton return, especially with the trade deadline additions of Luis Garcia Jr. and Heliot Ramos.

But I do believe that Jones deserves a shot.

However, it's clear that the 25-year-old is still very raw and needs more seasoning. The high fastball is generally a pitch with which young hitters experience difficulty. Most of the time, it would just be a ball if they choose not to swing at it.

Because Jones does have a good eye and solid plate discipline, I do think he can eventually learn to stop taking the bait.

Until he does that, though, opposing pitchers are going to have a field day going after Jones' blatantly obvious weakness.
