The New York Yankees could acquire a catcher at the trade deadline.
The New York Yankees are always a team to watch at the trade deadline, as they are seeking their first World Series title since 2009.
The Yankees are 49-40 early into July and are currently without their superstar, Aaron Judge, as he recovers from a stress fracture of a rib.
Despite Judge's absence over the last month, New York still holds a winning record and they are only four games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the AL East.
As the trade deadline approaches, they could be aggressive in adding to their roster for a playoff push. In The Athletic's trade deadline article, Jim Bowden names Ryan Jeffers as the best fit for the Yankees.
Jeffers is having a solid season for the Minnesota Twins, who are 44-47 and could be sellers at the trade deadline. Jeffers is slashing .295/.408/.541 with seven home runs, seven doubles, 26 RBIs, 26 runs, and a .949 OPS across 37 games.
He would be an upgrade in the lineup for New York, as Austin Wells is more of a defensive catcher. Wells is hitting .153/.250/.233 with four home runs, two doubles, 10 RBIs, 16 runs, and a .483 OPS.
Jesse Johnson-Imagn ImagesHe has struggled with the bat, and acquiring a catcher of Jeffers caliber would be a major upgrade for the Yankees lineup.
New York made it to the World Series in the 2024 season but fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. They were then eliminated in the ALDS in 2025, and have an aging roster.
While Judge is still on the roster and in his prime, the Yankees need to capitalize and go all-in. Prior to the injury, Judge was poised to win another MVP award, slashing .248/.375/.533 with 17 home runs, 10 doubles, 38 RBIs, 43 runs, and a .907 OPS.
The Yankees should be aggressive at the deadline to avoid wasting another year of Judge's prime, and a trade for Jeffers would help their run for a 28th World Series title.
