The New York Yankees are in trade talks with the Miami Marlins for pitcher Edward Cabrera, and a deal would probably look something like this.

The New York Yankees are reportedly in trade discussions with the Miami Marlins for pitcher Edward Cabrera, which should not come as too much of a shock.

After all, the Yankees have been searching for another starter, and Cabrera has been floated as a potential target multiple times this offseason.

But what would a trade for Cabrera actually look like?

Well, given the fact that Cabrera is coming off of a breakout campaign and is under team control through 2028, he certainly wouldn't come cheap.

Luckily, New York is loaded with arms in its farm system that it can include in a trade package for the 27-year-old. Carlos Lagrange, Elmer Rodriguez, Bryce Cunningham and Ben Hess are all possibilities. Chase Hampton and Thatcher Hurd could come up in discussions, as well.

It's also important to remember that the Marlins are loaded with pitching as it is, which is why they have deemed Cabrera expendable. So position players like Jasson Dominguez, Spencer Jones and Dillon Lewis — all of whom are outfielders — could all be on the table.

You kind of get the feeling that infielders George Lombard Jr. and Dax Kilby would be off limits in a deal for Cabrera.

Chances are, Miami would get to pick one of the Yankees' pitching prospects (or two, depending on where they rank in New York's system), one outfielder and then maybe one or two more ancillary pieces. Maybe something like Lagrange, Lewis and Brock Selvidge (a lefty hurler) or a package that includes Dominguez, Hess and another top 20-30 prospect.

Talkin' Yanks suggested a package that would feature Hess and Lewis, but you would figure that the Marlins would ask for more than that in a potential deal (although both Hess and Lewis have rocketed up the Yankees' top prospects list).

We need to keep in mind the risks that come with Cabrera, though.

He has been in the majors for five years and has only thrown 100 innings once, which came this past year when he totaled 137.2 frames and logged a 3.53 ERA.

Cabrera battled through significant command troubles between 2021 and 2024, and he has also dealt with some nagging injuries throughout his career. That included 2025 when he missed some time as a result of an elbow issue.

But at the same time, he is an uber-talented pitcher who throws 100 mph and has nasty breaking stuff, and with three years of club control remaining, Miami is under no obligation to trade him now. So if the Fish are going to move him, it's going to be on their terms.

That means the Yankees may have to pay a rather steep price for a pitcher who is good, but is definitely not an ace. At least not yet.

Brian Cashman is notoriously stingy with prospects, so it will be interesting to see if the two sides can find a match here.

Whether or not Cashman moves Dominguez or Jones may also depend on the Yankees plan on re-signing Cody Bellinger, to whom they apparently made a second offer over the weekend.

We'll see if New York can get something done with Cabrera. If not, Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta is also available, although the fact that he is slated to hit free agency after 2026 makes a potential trade more complicated.
