With how big of an upgrade Corey Seager would be for the New York Yankees, it’d make sense if the front office were willing to move on from nearly every player Texas wants.
Of course, that doesn't mean they should go out and trade players on the big league roster, but if it's just prospects they have to move, it wouldn't be the worst idea to move on from a few of them.
There's also reason to believe it could help other prospects in the Yankees’ farm system, as Tobey Schulman pointed out.
He examined players the Yankees would have to move to land Seager, but also stated that New York could allow George Lombard Jr. to come up and play third base if it decides to trade Ryan McMahon upon landing Seager.
“The first name Texas might want in return is a current member of New York's Major League roster. Moved at this past trade deadline, Ryan McMahon could be an easy throw-in for the Yankees. This frees up a third-base spot for Anthony Volpe and Jose Caballero.
“It also gives the freedom to offer that position to George Lombard Jr. when he's ready to make his Major League debut. He likely won't take everyday reps at third at the highest level in 2026, so having Caballero or Volpe to man down third with Seager at shortstop could be a potential move,” he wrote.
If Seager is indeed available, it'll be interesting to see what type of package he goes for.
On the surface, he's a player the Yankees should be willing to give up a good bit for, but it's also important to recognize some of the injuries he's dealt with throughout his career.
Already 31 years old and on a $325 million contract through 2031, Seager isn't cheap and will come with the risk of not playing every day.
He's yet to play in more than 123 games in any of his past three seasons.
In the same breath, he's also proven that he's one of the better shortstops, if not the best shortstop in baseball, when on the diamond.
