It was yet another difficult night for Anthony Volpe on Tuesday night to open a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers.
After an 0-for-3 night with two strikeouts, Volpe is out of the lineup on Wednesday night. Jose Caballero will start at shortstop. New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone has been loyal to Volpe but as the postseason approaches, it might be time to move Volpe to the bench.
Along with two strikeouts last night, Volpe failed to get a sacrifice bunt down, costing the Yankees the chance at a big rally. Volpe is now hitting .206 this season with an OPS of .661 and 140 strikeouts.
Volpe has struggled in every facet this season. Along with his performance at the plate, Volpe has committed a league-high 19 errors.
Caballero, while hitting just .233 since coming to the Yankees at the trade deadline, brings versatility and speed. Caballero has 43 stolen bases this season. He has committed just four errors spread across shortstop and the outfield this season. Right now, Caballero has as good a chance, if not better, at the plate than Volpe right now while bringing a spark in other areas.
New York is in the midst of an important series against the Tigers before taking on the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees remain three games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East.
The Yankees remain comfortably in a wild card spot while still battling for the division. As the regular season winds down before the playoffs begin, it is time for Caballero to play everyday.
