The NASCAR Cup Series raced on Easter Sunday for three years, at Bristol dirt in 2022 and 2023 and Richmond in 2024, before the concept went away. Lower ratings, ho-hum attendance and taking away a holiday weekend in an already-jam-packed schedule with few off-weekends were cited as reasons for the change.
The NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series still race on Easter weekend but in the days leading up to the holiday. However, other sports, most notably basketball, still compete on Easter Sunday, while NASCAR doesn't.
