What Carson Hocevar’s win means, where Kyle Busch goes next after a crew chief change, and is NASCAR for sale after Steve O’Donnell’s promotion? Find out the latest on ahead of this weekend’s action at Texas Motor Speedway on The Racing Roundtable!
This week on The Racing Roundtable, NASCAR Roundtable publisher Tyler Jones, The Racing Experts founder Dominic Aragon, and ARCA Menards Series driver Matt Kemp are joined by racecar driver and podcaster Paul Fodde.
Jones opens the show talking about Carson Hocevar’s win at Talladega. In Hocevar’s 91st career start, he took the checkered flag for the very first time, and it has been quite the journey to get there.
There have been plenty of comparisons for Hocevar to the likes of Dale Earnhardt to Kyle Busch, and he’s embraced the heel role in the NASCAR Cup Series. Jones said that Hocevar is the exactly the type of villain the sport needs right now, as he hasn’t made too many friends on the racetrack, but brings a level of excitement that NASCAR needs right now.
Aragon shifted gears to Kyle Busch. The two-time champion is off to the worst start of his career, and RCR decided to make a crew chief change, swapping out Jim Pohlman for Andy Street.
Although there is a new commander atop the pit box, Aragon said that he does not think it will solve Busch’s issues, as he believes the problems at RCR right now are bigger than the crew chief. He also said he believes that Busch is unlikely to return to the organization next season, as he is unlikely to be content with how the team is racing long-term.
While Talladega provided an exciting finish with Hocevar’s wild celebration, a lot people believe the race underdelivered including Kemp. He explained that the issues at Talladega Superspeedway are not with the track, but rather the package of racing which is limiting passing and emphasizing fuel saving.
Fodde gave his thoughts on everything going on in NASCAR, as well as his love of the sport. He shared about his efforts to race in the ARCA Menard’s Series, while also covering the sport as a podcaster.
The guys also reacted to the news of Steve O’Donnell being named the new CEO of NASCAR, while also sharing their thoughts on a potential sale of NASCAR. They also previewed this weekend’s action at Texas Motor Speedway, and took a deep-dive into the waxing moon crescent’s potential effect on the race.
