Playoff hopes ignite as the 76ers clash with the Rockets. Will the 76ers be able to win and move up to a higher seeding, or will Houston's defense be too much for them?
The Philadelphia 76ers will face the Houston Rockets on April 9th in a matchup that carries important implications for both teams.
For Philadelphia, every game at this stage of the season is crucial. Sitting in the middle of a tightly packed Eastern Conference race, the 76ers are battling to secure a guaranteed playoff spot and not have to go through the play-in tournament. With teams like the Orlando Magic and Charlotte Hornets hovering around the same record, a single win or loss could impact seeding.
The 76ers have shown flashes of good play as of late, but those flashes have also coincided with bouts of inconsistent play and late-game collapses, resulting in a 6-4 record in their last 10 games.
Good performances from Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid will be critical. Philadelphia's offense is among the best in basketball when Embiid is on the floor, as he can operate from all three areas of the court while Maxey puts pressure on the defense with drives to the rim and running in transition. Philadelphia will need to overwhelm Houston with its offensive firepower, but this won't be easy, as Houston has one of the league's staunchest defenses.
Meanwhile, Houston enters the matchup with a different outlook. They are already a 50-win team and have a secure playoff seeding. But with only one game separating them from the No. 3 seed in the conference, there is a chance Houston can move up in seeding. Although considering they're positioned to play the heavily injured Lakers in the first round, they may be satisfied with their seeding.
In recent matchups, the 76ers have gotten the best of the Rockets. While these games go back years, the way the Sixers have won remains the same: overwhelm Houston offensively.
Houston has a great defense, but offensively, they can be a bit stagnant at times, as they rely on isolations from players such as Kevin Durant and Alphren Sengun to generate points. If Philadelphia can push the pace and turn this into a shootout, things could be tough for the Rockets. However, if the Rockets can shut down Philadelphia's perimeter players and make life as difficult as possible for Embiid, then they can win.
Overall, this is a matchup of two teams with different levels of desperation. Philadelphia is desperate to move up in its conference to avoid the play-in tournament. Houston is secure in their seeding, and depending on how they feel about matchups, they could be fine with where they are at or feel determined to move up. Either way, this game has seeding implications for both teams and could determine the playoff path that they have to take.
