The Detroit Pistons beat the Philadelphia 76ers 116-93 to secure their first seed in the conference. Will Philadelphia be able to bounce back and avoid the play-in?
The Philadelphia 76ers suffered a 116-93 loss to the Detroit Pistons in a game that started off competitive but got out of hand after the opening stretch.
Detroit set the tone early, jumping out to a 41-31 lead thanks to efficient scoring from the entire team. Daniss Jenkins led the way in the first, scoring eight points and making four assists. Philadelphia managed to rally in the second quarter, as they briefly tied the game. However, the Pistons closed the half on a `15-4 run, taking a 71-60 lead into halftime.
From there, the game tilted heavily in Detroit's favor. The Pistons extended their lead throughout the third quarter and eventually pushed the lead to as much as 26 points. Philadelphia's offense fell apart, particularly in the fourth, as the Sixers shot 5-20 from the field and 0-6 from three, killing any potential chance of a comeback.
Tyrese Maxey led the 76ers with 23 points, serving as the primary offensive option with Joel Embiid out. Paul George added 20 points, continuing his good play since coming back from suspension, and rookie V.J. Edgecombe contributed 19 points. Despite these efforts, Philadelphia's offense lacked consistency as their role players struggled all night and were unable to do anything against Detroit's staunch defense.
Detroit, on the other hand, played well without its star player, guard Cade Cunningham. Forward Tobias Harris led the way with 19 points, while Jenkins had 16 points and 14 assists. All-Star center Jalen Duren also contributed with 16 points and 7 rebounds.
The Pistons' dominance extended beyond scoring, as Detroit out-rebounded Philadelphia 45-33 and had 16 more assists as a team.
For Detroit, this secures the first seed in the Eastern Conference. Now, they have the option to rest their main players ahead of the playoffs. For Philadelphia, this loss puts them at the seventh seed. They will have to play well for the rest of the season if they want to avoid the Play-In Tournament.
