The Philadelphia 76ers (7-5) returned home after their one-game road trip to Detroit. The Sixers returned home to host the Clippers (4-9) after their 114-105 loss to the Pistons. Although they were without Joel Embiid, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Adem Bona, Philadelphia received the services of Paul George for the first time this season.
George got the start alongside Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Dominick Barlow, and Andre Drummond. Jared McCain also made his return from a quick trip to the G-League after a rough return to action.
As for LA, they were without Derrick Jones Jr. and Kawhi Leonard.
George took no time getting his 16th season started, draining the first basket of the game off a zero-hesitation three-pointer. George also tacked on a pair of free throws, but those would be the only points for Philadelphia through the first three minutes as the Clippers opened the game on a 14-0 run after that.
Edgecombe found his game early in the first quarter with a mid-range basket and a three-pointer off an assist from George. The Sixers brought the score back within six, but would have to settle with a 33-25 deficit at the end of one. James Harden was scorching in the first period with 17 points in the quarter. Maxey joined Edgecombe and George with five points each for Philadelphia.
George started the game hot, but he went on to miss his next four attempts, including a turnover at the start of the quarter. He was able to get himself back on the board with a good floater attempt following an Edgecombe miss.
Once the Sixers brought the lead back to six again, Ivica Zubac hit a hook shot following a Cam Christie basket to put the lead back at ten and force a Philadelphia timeout.
Coming out of the timeout, the Sixers went on a 13-4 run, including two back-to-back floaters from Maxey, one resulting in an and-one. However, Los Angeles responded with a 12-3 run of their own to end the quarter to take a 56-46 lead to the locker rooms.
Maxey kept the 76ers afloat to start the half, scoring the first seven points for Philadelphia before Edgecombe added a dunk to force the Clippers into a timeout. Philadelphia went off on an 11-0 run during the third and looked to be closing the gap for good.
Unfortunately for the 76ers, however, Zubac and the Clippers had the response for every run to extend the lead. A strong 13-point quarter from Maxey helped keep the Sixers in fighting distance, but they would still trail 83-73 heading into the final frame.
This was yet another fourth quarter in which Maxey took over for the Sixers to stay afloat. He started the quarter with a near thirty-footer and followed it with a sequence of another three and an and-one layup to pull the 76ers within three.
Trendon Watford tacked on his fourth basket of the game, and another Maxey bucket made it a 14-3 76ers run and the first lead for Philadelphia since the first quarter.
Quinten Grimes was another unsung hero of the night as he collected 15 of his 19 points in the second half to help salvage the comeback. This one came down to the final minutes, which featured Maxey nearly ending the game with a three-pointer to extend the lead to four, followed by two turnovers to give the Clippers a chance to come back and win.
Luckily, Maxey and Philadelphia hang on to complete the comeback 110-108 to improve to 8-5. Maxey finished with 39 points while Drummond and Edgecombe added 14 each.
Philadelphia will host the Toronto Raptors (8-5) on Wednesday at 7 pm EST. The Sixers won the previous matchup 130-120 on November 8th, so the Sixers hope to continue this win streak.
