A recap of the Philadelphia 76ers' Tuesday night loss to Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.
The Philadelphia 76ers (33-28) taking down Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs (44-17) without Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Kelly Oubre Jr. proved to be too tall of a task, as they fell 131-91.
The Spurs got off to a hot start, leading by as many as 12 points in the first quarter behind strong scoring from their guard trio of De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper. Philadelphia was able to cut San Antonio's lead down to seven points to end the opening quarter.
It was more of the same in the second quarter, as the Spurs extended their lead to more than 20. However, backup guard Cameron Payne and Tyrese Maxey were doing all they could to keep the Sixers competitive. Philadelphia went into the locker room trailing by 25.
76ers rookie V.J. Edgecombe was ruled out for the remainder of the game at halftime due to lower back soreness. He took a hard fall on a foul by Spurs forward Carter Bryant just seconds before halftime.
The trend of the Spurs dominating continued coming out of halftime and for the remainder of the game, as they extended their lead to over 40. Philadelphia subbed out their starters midway through the third quarter.
Maxey finished as the leading scorer for Philadelphia with 21 points to go along with eight rebounds and two assists on 8 of 19 shooting and 33.3% shooting from three-point range in 25 minutes of action.
Forward Jabari Walker performed quite well in his second-half minutes, recording 20 points and six rebounds on 7 of 10 shooting.
Harper and Devin Vassell led the charge for the Spurs, each tallying 22 points on efficient shooting. Victor Wembanyama finished with just 10 points but had eight rebounds, six blocks, and three steals.
Philadelphia will look to get back in the win column Wednesday night against the Utah Jazz (18-43).
