The Philadelphia 76ers will have quite a busy free agency.
With the 76ers falling to the New York Knicks in a sweep on Sunday, attention now turns to the offseason. While free agency is still more than a month away, Philadelphia has key pieces to consider making decisions about, including Quentin Grimes and Kelly Oubre Jr.
Bleacher Report believes if free agency began today, the one move the 76ers would make is signing a big wing.
"This could also be "re-sign" a big wing because the high cost of options on the unrestricted market may mean the Philadelphia 76ers have to settle for bringing back Kelly Oubre Jr. or Quentin Grimes (who's really not a big wing) to fill what's looking like a sizable roster void this summer," B/R's Grant Hughes wrote.
Oubre was fantastic all season for the Sixers on both ends of the floor, but the same cannot be said about Grimes. The latter crumbled in the postseason, averaging just 6.7 points on 39.7% shooting. If Philadelphia can only afford to bring back one of the two, the decision should be a no-brainer in Oubre's favor.
Hughes went on to pitch a few outside possibilities.
"Rui Hachimura? Harrison Barnes? Old friend Matisse Thybulle? Those are more reasonable possibilities," Hughes shared. "The 76ers should target one of them in addition to retaining Oubre if they're willing to tangle with tax penalties and hard caps."
The reality is the 76ers' bench was greatly outmatched by New York's in their second-round series. While it's clear Philadelphia has the star power necessary to compete for a championship, the depth behind them was severely lacking against the Knicks.
Moving on from sophomore guard Jared McCain at the trade deadline looks worse and worse with each passing day. He is thriving with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the playoffs.
But, with that decision in the rearview, making a few crucial moves once free agency comes around will be key to the Sixers being competitive in the 2026-2027 campaign.
