The Philadelphia 76ers have garnered quite the attention since they made their offseason moves.
All these decisions have essentially put a target on their back as they start the quest for an NBA championship. Even still, someone always has an opinion regarding the team. The media critics have their own view on how this team can win a title, and it’s something many have already said.
NBA Champion Shaquille O'Neal has chimed in to share his thoughts on how the 76ers can go all the way. While joining ClutchPoints, O’Neal detailed the properties of a winning team.
“The team has enough talent to make a deep run, but the question is whether everybody accepts their role, shares the ball, and stays healthy.” O’Neal proclaimed.
Now this isn’t anything we haven’t heard before. In fact, it’s the only thing that people keep saying. Staying healthy is something really out of their control. This is why they went out and added players like Anfernee Simons and Dean Wade. No, they may not be starters, but they are capable of taking over and keeping things moving. The team has already made a point to emphasize that this team is about the whole, not the individual.
It’s something the sports world states, but yet, it doesn’t turn out the way they imagined. But something feels different about this team. It’s not just one player saying this; it’s the whole team. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has only been on the team for a month, and even he is preaching about being selfless and doing what he can to help the team.
Possibly the biggest obstacle to overcome could be sharing the ball. Not due to any selfishness from the team, but just there being too many stars to get the ball too. Even still, if they can move the ball around, everyone will be able to get their shots up. With LeBron James running the offense, it could stand to say that every player will be content with their shots.
When O’Neal was in the NBA, he could use his sheer size and strength to dominate his opponents. In this new age of basketball, there’s a little more finesse to the game. This Philadelphia team screams finesse. You have the skilled shooters in Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown. The savvy veteran IQ of James and intricate movements of Joel Embiid can cause major problems for anyone. We can’t forget about the slasher VJ Edgecombe and how he can change the game at the drop of a hat.
What O’Neal wants from the team they have already developed. If the offseason workouts are any indication, they will have what they need to get a title.
