If Maxey can light up the scoreboard the next few years, he could find himself in rare company. A Supermax deal could await the all-star guard..
Tyrese Maxey may find himself in line for a major payday. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia 76ers may find themselves in a tough situation if their All-Star guard can rack up a couple more All-NBA selections.
If Maxey can be chosen for two of the next three All-NBA teams, he would be eligible for a supermax deal worth $389 million over five seasons, per ESPN's Bobby Marks.
The way Maxey has been playing over the last few years, it’s no question that he could qualify for this new deal. Since he’s entered the league, his numbers have increased exponentially. The last four years, Maxey has averaged at least 20 points.
In the last three, he scored over 25 per game, and that’s with All-Stars Joel Embiid and Paul George on the team. With Jaylen Brown and LeBron James on the roster, many could think the scoring will decrease with players needing a certain amount of touches.
Actually, this could work in his favor. If Maxey can move to the '2,' it would put him in his more natural position as a scoring guard. If he can move freely without the ball, it’s no doubt that this could aid him in the quest for that supermax deal.
The 76ers should not hesitate to give it to him if eligible.
To make an All-NBA team means enhancing your game beyond just scoring. You have to be efficient and reliable when it matters the most. Even though he has to share the ball more than ever before, it’s worth noting that he can be counted on to make tough shots when it matters the most.
Maxey is going to have tough competition at the guard position. Between players like Tyrese Haliburton, Kyrie Irving, and Damian Lillard returning from injury, it’ll make it that much harder to get a selection. The good thing is he doesn’t have to rely on making All-NBA First Team.
In order to make this thing happen, it can’t be forced; Maxey has to play within the game and let things come to him. When he is given the opportunity, he has to make the right decision. It may not always be the time to score; assists can help you earn an All-NBA selection as well.
There may be a bunch of new faces, but for a player like Maxey, all these new pieces will give him free reign to dominate in a way he never thought possible.
