76ers Could Target Lockdown Western Conference Wing Ahead of NBA Trade Deadline cover image

Should the 76ers have Herb Jones on their radar ?

With the NBA Trade Deadline just days away, teams around the league are looking to make significant adjustments ahead of the Feb 5th deadline.

Among those teams are the Philadelphia 76ers, who improved to 28-21 after a win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday and may look to upgrade their roster to strengthen their postseason chances.

One potential target the 76ers can pursue is New Orleans Pelicans wing Herb Jones.

So far this season in 29 games, Jones is averaging 9.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.4 assists, while shooting 39.7% from the field and 30.4% from three-point range. He remains one of the premier defensive wings in the league, despite being limited to 20 games last season due to an ankle injury.

His best season was in 2023-24, when he finished fifth in Defensive Player of the Year voting and earned an All-Defensive first-team selection, averaging 11.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.6 steals while shooting 41% from behind the arc.

If traded to Philadelphia, Jones would provide elite perimeter defense and much-needed wing depth. His ability to guard multiple positions and space the floor on offense could help alleviate pressure on stars like Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

Jones could also serve as a stopgap option on the wing while Paul George is currently serving a 25-game suspension for banned substance use.

There's no indication that the Pelicans are actively looking to move Jones ahead of the deadline or other core players, such as Zion Williamson and Trey Murphy III.  The Pelicans are currently 13-39 following their loss to the 76ers on Saturday.

Jones has been linked to trade rumors in the past, as numerous teams around the league have expressed interest in acquiring him over the years, including the 76ers, who were reportedly linked to him as a part of a potential deal for the No. 3 pick in the 2025 draft, the pick that ultimately became V.J. Edgecombe; however, no trade ultimately materialized.

Still, with the deadline approaching, the Sixers could monitor the situation and become players for his services if circumstances change.
