A radio analyst called the Philadelphia 76ers' decision to send Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder an "embarrassment."
The Philadelphia 76ers' decision to trade sophomore guard Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder is looking more and more foolish with each passing day.
From Philadelphia's perspective, guard Quentin Grimes missed the last two games with an illness, which forced coach Nick Nurse to play Kyle Lowry substantial minutes and use Trendon Watford as a part of the backcourt.
Meanwhile, in Oklahoma City, McCain is only seeing his numbers rise as games progress. He went from recording five points and two rebounds in his first appearance with the Thunder to tallying 13 points, three rebounds, and two assists in his fourth game.
Because of this, the 76ers are facing heavy criticism over the trade, including from radio analyst Spike Eskin.
"If Tyrese Maxey were to miss two weeks, V.J. Edgecombe were to miss two weeks, Quentin Grimes were to miss two weeks, there is no one to replace them in the rotation. No one," Eskin said on 94WIP Sports Radio. "We were told that the reason that Jared McCain would never get time here [Philadelphia] is because of the glut of guards they have and because they drafted V.J. Edgecombe."
McCain's minutes did see a major decrease in Philadelphia, going from 25.7 minutes per game in the 2024-25 season to just 16.8 minutes in his sophomore campaign. He is playing 18.5 minutes per game for the Thunder.
Edgecombe bursting onto the scene certainly played a part in this, but so did his injury as well as his lack of production when on the floor.
Eskin continued, "So they traded him to the Oklahoma City Thunder, the deepest team in the league and the best team in the league... [McCain] looked great out there, running offense for them, all that stuff. What an embarrassing answer for the Philadelphia 76ers."
"What an embarrassment for Nick Nurse and Daryl Morey to say that we just can't figure out how to make use of this guy all year long. What an embarrassment. I hope this haunts them. I hope the kid makes the Hall of Fame," Eskin concluded.
McCain has a long way to go to becoming a Hall of Famer, but his progression with his new team is clearly sparking much frustration among Philadelphia fans.
