The Philadelphia 76ers could turn to an NBA champion to finish out the roster if they lose the LeBron James sweepstakes.
The Philadelphia 76ers are saving their final roster spot for 22-time All-Star and free agent forward LeBron James.
But in the event the Sixers miss out on James, the front office does need to finish filling out the roster. The most discussed needs for Philadelphia are another backup center or an additional wing. This is because Adem Bona and Ariel Hukporti are an unproven set of secondary centers while the team simply lacks talented forwards behind Jaylen Brown.
Despite these being the most talked-about voids on the roster, FanSided urges the 76ers to pursue guard Bruce Brown in free agency after Matisse Thybulle signed with the Los Angeles Lakers.
FanSided made the point that the 76ers could use additional defense in the second unit, which is valid. However, Brown is not the ideal choice to bolster the roster on that end of the floor due to his positional overlap and size.
The Sixers' secondary backcourt is seemingly set with rookie Labaron Philon Jr. and free agency signing Anfernee Simons. Neither is a strong defender, but the duo should be able to uphold a strong level of play when Tyrese Maxey or V.J. Edgecombe needs a rest. Having another guard in the mix is not a terrible idea, as Philon could take additional time to develop, but NBA Summer League proved he's ready to contribute right away.
At 6 foot 4, 202 pounds, it will be tough for Brown to match up against opposing small forwards. Thybulle is only one inch taller and the same weight but plays a much more physical brand of basketball.
Still, Brown is a strong defender and can contribute offensively as well. The NBA champion averaged 7.9 points and 2.1 assists on 47.5% shooting and 38.5% shooting from three-point range in 82 games for the Denver Nuggets last season.
The reality is signing Brown should not turn into the 76ers' top priority if they miss out on James, but he's at least a name worth paying attention to.
