Matt Cord has returned for his 28th season with the Philadelphia 76ers. Originally, James retired following the 2025-2026 season but changed his mind and will now call games for the likes of LeBron James and Jaylen Brown.
Cord’s return means that fans will feel comfort and excitement knowing that their favorite announcer is staying for one more season. Having James and Brown on the team was a strong influence in Cord’s return to the place where his name is etched in history.
It wasn’t just the offseason moves that compelled Cord to come back; it was a text from a familiar face, Allen Iverson. The 76er legend sent out a message to Cord and let him know that his job wasn’t quite done. He felt Cord had another year left in him, and that weighed heavily on Cord’s decision to come back.
Cord is not only the voice of the 76ers, but he’s also a host for a daytime talk show where he apparently tested out announcing for LeBron James. It was then that he knew it was time to come out of retirement to give the fans what they want, a voice of great dexterity, they could call the game like no one else.
Cord worked in the media world for well over two decades and built a rapport for one of the best media personalities there is. His voice is very distinctive, and it’s what fans have always loved about him.
It just goes to show how impactful one offseason can be on anyone. To be okay with calling it a career to go back because of two important roster movies says plenty in regard to what the team has done this offseason. This is going to be something very special for the fans. Not only will they get to see a new team on a quest for a championship, but they also get their favorite announcer back for one more season.
This year will be Cord’s last, as he doesn’t plan to return. But it gives fans the right to acknowledge Cord for everything he’s done for the franchise. Every game the fans will appreciate his voice more and more until the season runs its course. The hope is that the season would end in the culmination of an NBA Finals championship.
Matt Cord will be beloved by all, so it’s only right he gets to go out announcing quite possibly the greatest player to ever play the game.
