The Philadelphia 76ers are entering the All-Star break with plenty at stake for the back half of the 2025-26 NBA season.
The team is the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference and is focused on maintaining and potentially improving its position in the playoff race.
As they prepare for the final stretch of the season, the team could look to add more depth to the roster as they head into the final stretch of the season.
With that in mind, one notable pickup who can be a difference maker for the 76ers is veteran guard D'Angelo Russell.
Russell reportedly will not report to the Wizards, as the team explores options for his future. He was recently traded as part of the deal that sent Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards. Prior to that, he signed with the Dallas Mavericks last offseason.
Given the situation, it appears likely that the former All-Star guard is heading to the buyout market. If the Wizards ultimately waive him, teams like the 76ers could have a prime opportunity to sign him if the Wizards proceed with a buyout.
His tenure in Dallas was rather disappointing, as he struggled to find consistency and carve out a role in the rotation, averaging 10.2 points, 4.0 assists, and 2.5 rebounds, and was benched for most of his time there. Despite that, he has shown throughout his career to be an impactful contributor in the right system.
He has seen great success throughout his career, notably during previous stops with the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers. There he got to showcase his scoring ability and playmaking skills. These experiences could make him a valuable asset for any team, including the 76ers.
If Washington opts for a buyout, Russell can emerge as an intriguing option for the 76ers, serving as a backup to Tyrese Maxey and giving the team much-needed backcourt depth.
Russell has shown he can still be a solid rotational point guard and can give the 76ers meaningful minutes boost as they look to close out the season strong.
