Philadelphia 76ers star guard Tyrese Maxey has emerged as one of the NBA's premier point guards.
The two-time All-Star continues to elevate his game, further cementing himself as a cornerstone of the franchise's future. So far this season, Maxey is averaging 29.1 points, 6.8 assists, and 4.1 rebounds on 46.2% shooting from the field. More importantly, he has embedded himself into the fabric of the city of Philadelphia, and people are taking notice.
While appearing on FanDuel’s Run It Back, former Sixers guard and Sixth Man of the Year winner Lou Williams spoke about Maxey's connection with the city of Philadelphia and his growing legacy.
“Tyrese Maxey will be revered in the city of Philadelphia for years and years to come," Williams said. "With what he's been able to do so young and early in his career, and the impact he has on winning and the community in Philadelphia as a whole."
Williams also highlighted the significance of Maxey recently surpassing Allen Iverson as franchise leader for most three-pointers made.
"Anytime you go out and get an Allen Iverson record, that's a cherry on top," Williams said. "Allen Iverson was never known as a three-point shooter. He was a mid-range guy, so this leaves the door open for Tyrese Maxey in this new day and age of play to go out and get a record so early in his career.
Williams added that Maxey’s early embrace by the city brings back memories of Iverson and his time in Philadelphia.
"How he's been embraced and loved so far reminds me of Allen Iverson,” Williams said. “It reminds me somewhat of my experience in Philadelphia. All of our small, undersized guards that go out and score a basketball... Philadelphia loves us because of that. Allen Iverson is the reason why we've been embraced like that. So I'm sure that he feels good about this record. I'm sure he's been embraced by AI, and they've spoken; this is great.”
Williams finally concluded by saying this accomplishment is just the beginning for Maxey.
“This is only the tip of the iceberg, Tyrese Maxey," Williams said. “He's gonna go out and get a number of these records out there. They need to have an opportunity compete for a championship if he sticks around long enough in the city of Philadelphia, but this is a great belt and a lot of great things to come for him in the near future.
Maxey continues to play like a superstar for the 76ers, and his trajectory holds the latest record, maybe just one of many in a historic run.
