The former All-Star ascends to the No. 2 front-office role, leveraging his deep scouting roots and local legacy to navigate a crucial offseason.
The Philadelphia 76ers are keeping a familiar name in a major front-office role.
According to Shams Charania, the Sixers are promoting assistant general manager Jameer Nelson to Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations under new president Mike Gansey. The move makes Nelson the No. 2 executive in Philadelphia’s front office and gives the franchise another respected basketball voice as the team enters an important offseason.
Before he became an NBA executive, Nelson was one of the best players in Saint Joseph’s history. He became a national college star, helped lead the Hawks to an unforgettable 2003-04 season, and later turned himself into a long-term NBA point guard. After being selected 20th overall in the 2004 NBA Draft, Nelson spent most of his career with the Orlando Magic and became an All-Star in 2009.
His NBA career was not built on overwhelming size or athleticism. It was built on strength, pace, leadership, and decision-making. Nelson had to understand angles, organize teammates, and make the most of his physical tools.
Nelson’s transition into management has been gradual. He joined the Sixers’ organization in 2020 as a scout and assistant general manager of the Delaware Blue Coats. From there, he became general manager of the Blue Coats before eventually being promoted to assistant general manager with the Sixers. That path gave him experience in scouting, player development, G League evaluation, and broader organizational decision-making.
That is important because Philadelphia could use better talent identification.
The Sixers have spent years chasing high-end names, but the margins have often been a problem. Finding useful rotation players, developing young talent, and understanding which players fit around stars have been just as important as the headline moves. Nelson’s background with the Blue Coats should help in that area.
Under Gansey, Nelson gives Philadelphia continuity. Gansey is the new outside voice from Cleveland, while Nelson already understands the Sixers’ internal structure, personnel, and recent organizational history. That balance could help the front office move with more clarity.
The timing couldn't be better either. Philadelphia has major decisions ahead involving Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, the draft, and free agency. The Sixers need a front office that can evaluate both present urgency and future sustainability.
Nelson will not be the final decision-maker, but his voice should carry significant amount of weight moving forward.
