Joel Embiid is now sidelined with just a few games left in the regular season. What does this mean for Philadelphia and their playoff hopes?

The news instantly changes their outlook for the rest of the season and adds another layer of uncertainty to the 76ers' playoff outlook.

The timing could not be worse for Philadelphia. The 76ers sit at 43-37 and are holding the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference, just two games behind the sixth-seeded Atlanta Hawks with only two games remaining in the regular season.

This means every result carries major weight, as just one win or loss could shake up the seedings in a huge way. Embiid's absence removes the team's most important player at the moment when the margin for error is practically nonexistent.

On the court, Embiid's impact is difficult to replace. He has averaged 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds across 38 games this season. Even in a limited workload, he remains the focal point of Philadelphia's offense. Without him, the 76ers will have to rely more on Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Paul George to make up for the missing scoring.

The larger concern for Philadelphia isn't just about missing a single game but also about what this means for the team and their playoff hopes. With only three games left, the 76ers are still trying to protect their place in the standings and avoid the play-in tournament. Losing Embiid at this stage puts even more pressure on the rest of the roster to keep their postseason hopes intact.

Overall, Embiid's surgery is a brutal setback for Philadelphia. Just as the team seemed like it would be fully healthy before the postseason, they lost their best player and have to adjust on the fly. Despite breakout seasons from players like Maxey and Edgecombe, the team's ceiling is still largely dependent on their franchise center.

The 76ers fell to the Houston Rockets on Thursday night.
