Joel Embiid's response to the question about whether his relationship with the 76ers management had improved was revealing less for what he said than for what he didn't say.
Instead of addressing things directly, he pivoted to the present, saying, "I mean, we're in the playoffs, we're 3-1, so that's what we focus on." It was a clear deflection and likely a deliberate one. Embiid wanted the conversation to stay on the court, not what was going on behind the scenes.
That guarded answer also fits the larger history between Embiid and the organization. The 76ers have accommodated his health, from listing him out with injury management to holding him out even when he wanted to play. Embiid was frustrated when he was held out of a game against the Washington Wizards; the organization was also fined for an injury report violation involving him earlier this season.
This context matters because it shows Embiid has not been treated like an ordinary star player. Philadelphia has built its team around his availability, his minutes, and his game-to-game status, which is why the relationship has felt like a mix of trust and caution.
A player with a long injury history like Embiid is not someone who can be played without worry; his health will always be a concern, no matter who is in the front office. He is still an elite player when healthy, averaging 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.8 assists this season, but he only appeared in 38 games and needed time to recover from an emergency appendectomy before returning in the postseason.
When Embiid sidestepped the question, it did not mean things were bad; it suggested they were complicated. Both sides know the partnership will be decided by his health just as much as his production. The Sixers have already spent this entire season prioritizing his health, even when it was against his wishes.
