Philadelphia will take on New York and look to play spoiler. The 76ers are looking for revenge after being beaten handedly in the playoffs by the Knicks.
NBA Opening Day for the 2026-2027 season will be a night many will remember. The Knicks get their championship rings, and New York gets to celebrate their glorious NBA title reign.
Then the lights turn on, and they face an old, storied rival in the Philadelphia 76ers. The team they destroyed in a 4-0 series win on their way to the title. The big difference is this isn’t the 76ers team of last year. They now have some firepower that could be a huge difference maker. Star wing Jaylen Brown and superstar forward LeBron James make their debut as new members of this Philadelphia team.
NBA guard Jalen Brunson feels the excitement of the matchup and is anxious to get this season started.
Brunson feels like every other NBA fan. His reasons may be different, but everyone will get to see James in his new threads. So what can we expect?
Some feel it’s going to be a barnburner of a game seeing transition basket after basket. But there's a good chance this will be more of a defensive standoff. Let’s not forget this is a divisional matchup. So no matter how folks look at it, it’s possible for there to be a little sloppiness. This is a team with two new starters and will have to get a feel for how the other plays. New York was able to stay in games because of how relentless they are and their ability to force turnovers and score in transition. If Philadelphia want to win their first game of the season, they’ll have to limit the mistakes.
When these two last met, the 76ers were outmatched, and it wasn’t even close. This time could be a different story. Brown and James will be the highlight of the team and will look to impose their will and spoil a night of celebration for New York.
Who’s going to be the one to have the coming-out party? It could be James or Brown, but what if MVP centre Joel Embiid wants to join in on the fun? This team has so many options it’s going to be hard to distinguish who will have the hot hand. On the other side of that is this team could come out flat and lay an egg. It’s all going to depend on the pace with which they play. If it’s a track match for most of the game, the edge will go to Philadelphia, but if the game slows down, it could fall to the Knicks because of their chemistry.
If the 76ers' first outing leaves much to be desired, prepare for plenty of overreactions. No matter who wins, in the words of Brunsion, “it’s going to be electric.”
