NBA insider Brian Windhorst shared an intriguing update regarding the LeBron James sweepstakes.
There is seemingly a new update on the LeBron James free agency sweepstakes every few hours at this point.
Most of the rumors have suggested the Cleveland Cavaliers are the clear frontrunners to sign James, but the latest from NBA insider Brian Windhorst is saying the opposite. Windhorst, on ESPN Cleveland, claimed he heard from a "good source" that the James signing is a "done deal" in another city besides Cleveland.
"I'm hearing stuff in other cities too. I'm not gonna say who but I had somebody on the phone with me today that I consider a good source who was swearing it's a done deal in another city," Windhorst said.
This update should give Sixers fans a rejuvenated level of optimism, as Philadelphia, along with the Miami Heat, is considered the other favorite to land the 22-time All-Star.
From a basketball standpoint, it's understandable why the 76ers remain in the running.
James would fit seamlessly into their starting power forward position, where he could thrive as a playmaker and secondary scorer and defender.
The Sixers already have plenty of offensive firepower without James between Tyrese Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, and Joel Embiid, so having arguably the best passer of all-time in the starting five would unlock those stars' potential even further.
Adding the four-time NBA champion to the mix would also further bolster the second unit by shifting free agency signing Dean Wade to the bench.
The problem is there is likely more than just the on-court fit factoring into the 41-year-old's decision.
Philadelphia lacks ties to James compared to the Heat and Cavaliers and cannot offer the same "storybook" ending as the other two organizations. However, the Sixers can present him with the unique opportunity to become the first player in NBA history to win a championship with four different teams.
Every report seems to contradict another, but the latest from Windhorst should spark some hope for Sixers fans.
