The 76ers have too many mouths to feed. It may be time to try and old offense to make everyone happy.
There is something to be said about a player being the sole All-Star on a winning team. It’s another to have four of them on one team.
The Philadelphia 76ers have done just that, and it could cause some problems.
It's safe to say that Chris Broussard’s comments on First Things First have some validity.
Broussard believes the team will win 50-plus games, but there are going to be some growing pains. Not only that, but Broussard detailed what it’s going to take for this team to win, an “equestrian style of play.” This is where it’s not all about one player but finding the open man for a clean shot at making a basket. For example, the triangle offense made famous by Michael Jordan and the 90s Chicago Bulls. Or even the 2000’s Los Angeles Lakers with Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.
It’s not far-fetched to say this is the best way to play. But it may be harder than people think. You’re talking about using ball-dominant players like forward Jaylen Brown and guard Tyrese Maxey, who are used to being the recipient of the score, to be off-ball players. It may be easy for someone like Maxey, but Brown is a different story.
This group is going to have to feel each other out. Broussard believes someone is going to have to do the dirty work. The guy who will have that task will have to be the youngest player in the lineup, second-year guard V.J. Edgecombe. He is considered the odd man out in the lineup, as everyone around him has accomplished so much and made a name for themselves.
Edgecombe has the scoring ability that's been confirmed, but now it comes down to effort plays and all the things that don’t show on the stat shit. It could be a hard foul on an opponent or maybe it’s defensive play that results in a turnover. He has to have an impact, or it could result in a shuffle of the starting lineup.
There has to be some continuity with the team if they want to be successful. It will require someone to take a backseat. It may not be a bad thing. That particular player, whoever it may be, could be an x factor at a later date and time. It’s a long road to the playoffs, but if this team can make it, one of these starters will help the team go on a potential historic run for the 76ers.
