A Western Conference executive believes Philadelphia 76ers guard Quentin Grimes will remain put.
Guard Quentin Grimes is one of three key free agents for the Philadelphia 76ers, alongside forward Kelly Oubre Jr. and center Andre Drummond.
What makes Grimes such an important free agent for Philadelphia is he plays a position the 76ers desperately need depth at. The Sixers' decision to deal Jared McCain at the trade deadline leaves them with just two guards under contract entering free agency: Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe.
While these are by far Philadelphia's two most talented backcourt pieces, the front office needs to ensure proper talent is in place behind them.
It appears the primary backup for Philadelphia's guard room could remain Grimes, as a Western Conference executive predicts he will re-sign with the 76ers.
"I do think he stays there [Philadelphia] out of pressure," a West executive said, per ESPN. "You have to keep at least one of [Grimes or Oubre], if not both, after that trade.
Grimes is a talented player, but he's far from consistent.
The best stretch of his career came with the 76ers during the 2024-2025 season, when he averaged 21.9 points on 46.9% shooting over a 28-game span. This made the trade for Grimes look like an absolute steal for Philadelphia, but he took a step in the wrong direction this season.
Grimes wasn't expected to average the same numbers with the stars back in the mix, but the hope was he would act as the 76ers' X-factor. Instead, he came up small when it mattered most in the playoffs, recording just 6.7 points per game.
This likely hurt his value on the open market, so it's possible the 76ers can get him back for cheaper than anticipated.
Oubre should remain the priority free agent for the 76ers, but if chatter around the league suggests Grimes will come back, that's good news for Philadelphia fans. It may not ease the pain of losing McCain for a late first-round pick, but it will ensure Maxey and Edgecombe have solid support entering next season.
