It looks like everyone wants to be a member of the Philadelphia 76ers, as Jrue Holiday appeared to be next until he wasn't.
Players from all over are eager for a shot at playing with LeBron James. At least, that’s what the rumor mill wants you to think.
Jrue Holiday of the Portland Trail Blazers has been the subject of speculation of a potential buyout and signing with the Philadelphia 76ers. This news is false, per NBA insider Jake Fischer, as there are no plans for the veteran to join the team.
But what would a player like Holiday bring to this team? Well, for one, he would bring championship experience. A trait that would help someone like James and also give a different insight on what it takes to win.
As a point guard, naturally, he would assume that role on the second unit and allow for other pieces to find where they fit. He could also focus on players like VJ Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey, as both have very different styles at the guard position.
His tutelage could be an extension of James when he is not on the floor. His ability to read defenses in pick-and-roll situations would be a huge benefit when they’re in a half-court set. Having a strong mix of veterans with young stars is the perfect combination when you’re trying to win a championship.
Holiday was a huge part of the Milwaukee Bucks championship run. His defensive skills were a major asset to the team in close game situations. With Philadelphia he would immediately bolster the team's defensive ratings and be an anchor for that second unit.
When James is resting it would be up to Holiday to work with guys like Anfernee Simons and Dean Wade who can be spot up shooters. For Simons it would allow him the opportunity to move off-ball and free him up from being pressured full court. Imagine the lineup that would entail James and Holiday sharing the floor.
This would result in James going from a safety valve to a downhill nightmare. Even though he wants to be an afterthought in the scoring department, it doesn’t mean he won’t go get his shots up when the situation calls for it.
Holiday would be everything a team like Philadelphia is missing. A scorer and on-ball defender. A Rondo-like presence that knows where to put the ball and who needs to have the ball in the right moment.
If Jrue Holiday were to find his way to Philadelphia. There’s no question he would only elevate the chances at a championship.
