Paul George has transformed a suspension into a reset, leveraging time off to rediscover his elite form and fuel the 76ers' playoff push. How far will Philly be able to go with a revitalized George?
Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George is reframing his 25-game suspension not as a setback but as a chance to reset physically and mentally.
Speaking about his condition and the decision-making process leading to the suspension, George emphasized that he was not dealing with a lingering injury but the rust from returning after a long time away from the court.
"Yeah, that time off," George said to Sixers Wire. "That time off was the time I needed for my body. That's been, really what unlocked me to kind of play free and play aggressive."
"I don't want people to get it confused," George explained. "I was healthy, but I needed time. I was coming back to try to hopefully, the games would've gotten me into shape, but the games were coming too fast, and my body wasn't responding quick enough as the games were going on. So, I knew. It was a hard decision. Like, do I keep playing? And I knew my body needed a little time to kinda heal without so much pounding and wear and tear. So, I knew this 25-game suspension, I was gonna use it wisely".
George's comments highlight the reality of returning from an injury and playing. Just because you are cleared to play doesn't mean you will hit the ground running. The NBA is a physically demanding league; being away from it for a long period of time means you will need to play your way back into game shape and fight through fatigue.
The time off to get his body in shape has done George wonders. He has been great for the 76ers since his return, looking like his old self with the silky smooth shot-creating ability that made him so great for the Clippers, Thunder, and Pacers.
The 76ers are in a tough playoff fight in the Eastern Conference, trying to secure a solid playoff position and avoid the play-in. If George can continue to play well, then the 76ers will have no issues making it to the postseason and maybe even making a deep run if things go well.
