One Philadelphia 76ers analyst believes the team has three crucial voids to address.
Despite upsetting the Boston Celtics in the first round of the NBA playoffs, the Philadelphia 76ers have a lot of work to do in order to become a true championship contender in the Eastern Conference.
It became clear in the 76ers' series against the New York Knicks that there are more problems to solve than just the availability of Joel Embiid. Free agency and the 2026 NBA Draft are the key ways Philadelphia can improve the roster this offseason.
The Athletic's Tony Jones boiled down the 76ers' offseason to three key needs.
"You can argue Embiid needs an athletic and rebounding power forward next to him," Jones wrote. "You can argue Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey need a dynamic third guard to supplement them. You can argue George could use more shooting around him."
Finding a power forward is likely to happen via the draft, as players such as Arizona's Koa Peat and Iowa State's Joshua Jefferson are expected to be available at Philadelphia's selection. If athleticism and rebounding are the traits the Sixers are seeking in a '4' to play alongside Embiid, Peat is the player to pick.
Retaining Quentin Grimes is absolutely an option for the 76ers to have him act as the primary backup to Maxey and Edgecombe. At 26 years old, he has already proven he's capable of being more than just a role player. However, he illustrated that during the 2024-2025 season, not this season.
Re-signing Grimes is a bit of a risk, but one worth taking.
George is quite a good shooter in his own right, so it's hard to say why Jones listed this a crucial need for Philadelphia. The nine-time All-Star knocked down 43.9% of his shots and 39.2% of his attempts from three-point range this season.
Rather than surrounding George with more shooting, the Sixers should look for a talented backup center. This way, when Embiid is sidelined, Philadelphia has someone they can lean on on a nightly basis.
Given that President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey said this team is not a championship-caliber team, expect significant change to the 76ers' roster this summer.
