Philadelphia 76ers guard Quentin Grimes is set to hit free agency this offseason with a handful of other teams likely to express interest in signing the 25-year-old.
Quentin Grimes has come alive on the offensive end for the Philadelphia 76ers with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George sidelined.
He has recorded more than 20 points in six of his last nine appearances, including a 31-point performance in a win over the Portland Trail Blazers on March 15. The only downside to Grimes stepping up in the absence of Philadelphia's stars is he'll be harder to retain in free agency this offseason.
One team Bleacher Report believes could steal Grimes away from the 76ers is the Atlanta Hawks, as the 25-year-old guard was listed as their 'dream' free agent target.
"The Hawks could have the funds to aim even higher than this, but the top players on the market feel like curious fits at best. (Unless they want to enter the Austin Reaves sweepstakes, but that could prove a waste of time.) Grimes could be a sensible target, then," B/R's Zach Buckley wrote. "As a 25-year-old two-way guard who could replace some of the shot-making and creation lost during the Trae Young trade."
The Hawks have a solid future even after dealing franchise cornerstone Trae Young at this year's trade deadline. Led by All-Star forward Jalen Johnson and No. 1 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft Zaccharie Risacher, Atlanta is home to quite a few intriguing young players.
Grimes could be added to that mix this summer. At age 25, it's entirely possible his best years are still ahead of him.
This season with the 76ers, Grimes is averaging 13.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.4 assists on 45.1% shooting and 32.9% shooting from three-point range in 65 games played. Atlanta would be banking on Grimes to revert to his 2024-2025 self, where he recorded more than 20 points per game over a nearly 30-game stretch in Philadelphia.
With less than a dozen regular season games to go, the Hawks are a playoff team in the Eastern Conference. Signing Grimes to an already competitive roster feels like a strong step in the right direction for Atlanta.
