Philadelphia 76ers owner Josh Harris had a rare opportunity in the sweepstakes for LeBron James.
The Philadelphia 76ers are joining exclusive company in the LeBron James free agency sweepstakes.
Up until Saturday, the only known executive to speak directly with James was his friend and Cleveland Cavaliers assistant general manager Brandon Weems. The two were seen hanging out in the Akron, Ohio area.
Now, 76ers owner Josh Harris can be added to this list.
Per NBCS' John Clark, "A source says Sixers owner Josh Harris was able to have a brief, friendly conversation with LeBron James yesterday at a VIP event at Fanatics Fest in New York."
Clark continued, "I’m told Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, and owner Josh Harris have let LeBron know they would love to have him join the team and the city of Philly would welcome him to the Sixers with open arms."
This is a major advantage for the 76ers, as few have held the opportunity to communicate face-to-face with the 22-time All-Star.
Philadelphia is clearly doing everything in their power to persuade James to sign with the organization. From executive Bob Myers pitching directly to his agent Rich Paul, to President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey uplifting the four-time champion, the Sixers are all-in.
It makes perfect sense why, as James could provide exactly what the 76ers are lacking: a true leader in the locker room who can support his command with his play on the court.
James, even at age 41, remains an All-Star-caliber player. He averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds on 51.5% shooting in 60 games for the Los Angeles Lakers last season. Not to mention, he could slot seamlessly into the starting power forward position.
Few in league history are as accomplished as James, which is why he could demand respect from the other stars on the roster. Right now, there are concerns about how the new-look core will mesh, but James could ease those worries.
For 76ers fans, the hope is undoubtedly that Harris pitched in this manner to James during their conversation.
