The Philadelphia 76ers fell embarrassingly short against Jordan Poole and the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday with a final score of 126-111.
Without Joel Embiid and Paul George in the lineup, Tyrese Maxey was yet again called upon to carry the load. He had a mediocre outing for his standards, recording 27 points, seven assists, five steals, and five turnovers on 39.1% shooting and 2 of 11 shooting from three-point range.
This game marks the fourth consecutive loss for Philadelphia entering Sunday's tough matchup against Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Maxey spoke postgame about what it's going to take to dig themselves out of this hole.
"It's going to take a lot," Maxey said, per NBC Sports Philadelphia. "You dig yourselves a hole. Only us can climb ourselves out of it, you know what I mean? We in this thing together through the highs, through the lows, through the peaks, through the valleys. We said that since day one, and it is what it is."
The hope is Embiid will be able to suit up against the Timberwolves, which will greatly strengthen their odds of snapping the losing streak.
Maxey then went on to explain what caused the loss to the Pelicans, saying, "We played a really good half, and then we come out there, and we played a good start to the third, honestly. Then it was bombs away, and they hit some shots, and you know it's difficult to come back from that with the momentum swing, and we tried to swing it back, but it was too late."
Philadelphia was outscored 40-26 in the third quarter behind strong performances from Saddiq Bey, Poole, and Herb Jones. Poole finished the night as New Orleans' leading scorer with 23 points on 53.3% shooting and 5 of 11 shooting from the arc.
For the 76ers, getting back on track versus the 35-22 Timberwolves won't be an easy task.
