The Philadelphia 76ers (31-26) surprisingly took down Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves (35-23) on Sunday night 135-108.
All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey led the way for Philadelphia with a stellar performance, finishing with 39 points, eight assists, three rebounds, and two steals on 57.1% shooting and 4 of 7 shooting from three-point range in 35 minutes of action. He did, however, have five turnovers.
Maxey had been struggling with his efficiency in recent weeks, so it's refreshing to see the 25-year-old back in a rhythm.
Following the upset victory, Maxey reacted to the win over Minnesota.
"It felt good, man... we needed it," Maxey said, per NBC Sports Philadelphia. "We just, we needed to let some emotions out after the last week or so, and I think we did that tonight... let some emotions out, played the right way, guys stepped up, made shots, and defended really well."
The No. 1 player who stepped up to support Maxey in this matchup was rookie phenom V.J. Edgecombe. The No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft recorded 24 points, seven rebounds, and two steals on 44.4% shooting and 6 of 7 shooting from the arc. Guard Quentin Grimes and forward Kelly Oubre Jr. also had solid outings, combining for 37 points, nine assists, and five steals.
Edwards was coming off a 40-point performance against the Dallas Mavericks, so holding him to under 30 points is quite an impressive feat for Philadelphia. He was quite efficient, shooting 11 of 19 from the field.
76ers coach Nick Nurse was also quite impressed with Maxey's performance.
"I think it's just an amazing mental adjustment for him to come in and have some tough games, and then, you know, kind of know we really need him to have a great one, and he just does it," Nurse said. "He plays like that, and then all of a sudden everybody else gets lifted too, and that's what great players are supposed to do. He sure did that tonight."
Thanks to this upset win, the 76ers are heading into Monday's game against the Indiana Pacers with some positive momentum.
