The Philadelphia 76ers may lose Quentin Grimes in free agency this offseason, leaving them with a serious void to fill.
There's a real possibility guard Quentin Grimes decides to walk in free agency for either more money or greater opportunity.
This would leave the Philadelphia 76ers with a serious void to fill in their backcourt, as Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe are the only guards under contract. Grimes may not have been the most consistent player in the 2025-2026 season, but he offered scoring off the bench and strong defensive prowess.
One player capable of providing those attributes on a smaller scale is Portland Trail Blazers guard Matisse Thybulle, who is set to hit free agency this offseason. He is a 3-and-D specialist, as he has always been a strong asset defensively and has developed his three-point shot throughout his seven years in the NBA.
It's worth noting signing Thybulle is rather redundant if the 76ers are able to retain Grimes.
Thybulle struggled to stay on the floor this season with the Trail Blazers, appearing in just 30 games. Still, he averaged 5.8 points and 2.0 steals on 39.8% shooting from three-point range.
This move would be a reunion for the two parties, as Thybulle spent the first three and a half seasons of his career in Philadelphia. During his best campaign with the Sixers (2022), he averaged 5.7 points and earned one of his two All-Defensive Team selections.
By no means should the 76ers prioritize reuniting with Thybulle over re-signing Grimes, but it's a strong alternative that will come at a cheap cost. Grimes is one of three key free agents for Philadelphia, along with forward Kelly Oubre Jr. and center Andre Drummond.
Grimes proved he has star potential during his 2024-2025 stint with the Sixers, averaging 21.9 points over 28 games. This could be the reason he isn't suiting up for Philadelphia next season, as another team could overpay him in hopes he returns to that form.
In that event, Thybulle becomes a real option for the 76ers in free agency.
