The Philadelphia 76ers will need to decide whether or not to extend Jaylen Brown's contract.
The Philadelphia 76ers' blockbuster trade for ex-Boston Celtics superstar Jaylen Brown is the most surprising move of the offseason so far.
Initial reaction aside, they are a plethora of follow-up questions that come with the deal.
How will Brown mesh with the 76ers' core? Are the negative rumors about him true? Will Philadelphia extend his lucrative contract?
The third question is the one we'll be analyzing, as on July 26, Brown is eligible to sign a one-year contract extension, per ESPN's Bobby Marks.
Brown still has three seasons remaining on his five-year, $285 million deal, so Philadelphia should not rush signing him to an extension unless the five-time All-Star gets impatient. Then, the 76ers front office should speed up negotiations to avoid one of their franchise cornerstones becoming disgruntled.
Brown will turn 30 years old right around the start of the NBA regular season, meaning he'll be 32 when his current contract expires. Plenty of stars are still performing at a high level at that stage of their careers, so the expectation should be Brown will too.
While signing him to a multi-year extension could come with risks, adding a single season to his current deal is a safe play to make.
Brown is going to make a major impact on the Sixers in the coming years.
He is an All-NBA wing who is coming off a season in which he carried the Celtics to the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference with a record of 56-26. Individually, the 2024 NBA Finals MVP thrived as well, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists on 47.7% shooting in 71 games.
Brown, alongside Tyrese Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, and Joel Embiid, should have no issues turning Philadelphia into a top title contender in the NBA for seasons to come.
The 76ers do face a major decision regarding his contract, but shoring up the roster to compete for the Larry O'Brien Trophy needs to be the priority right now.
