Philadelphia has made the necessary moves to win an NBA title. Could these additions prove to be a hindrance instead?
The Philadelphia 76ers are faced with a conundrum.
There may actually be too many stars on this team. Bleacher Report believes that this could be the downfall of the team.
When a group of superstars join a team, there’s always one player who has to be delegated as the third option. When you’re the third option, you’re usually limited in your new role, and some of your skills aren’t utilized. The difference with this Philadelphia team is that there’s four instead of three. This makes an already difficult situation that much harder.
Newly acquired star forward Jaylen Brown has stated that he's willing to do what it takes to get the job done.
It’s easy to say until you step on the court. Brown had one of the highest usage rates, and it stands to decide whether this will be something that causes problems. It may not be an issue within the team, but it may be a personal problem that he’ll have to overcome.
When it comes to the 76ers' former MVP center Joel Embiid, it’s strictly about his health. His production has been consistent when he’s on the court. Those degenerative knees are going to be his biggest hurdle. If he’s healthy, the only problem is he may not get the ball when the time calls for it. It’s so many mouths to feed; his game could take a hit.
Philadelphia’s all-star guard Tyrese Maxey could be the main one who benefits from having all these players. While he may have a high usage rate, his scoring ability may be the thing that gives him the edge. Maxey has the ability to get to the basket whenever he needs to. It stands to reason that not having the ball in his hands makes his scoring even more of a threat.
Now comes the biggest question mark, LeBron James. James is timeless. The only problem is his age is going to come into play. He is at the stage of his career where carrying a team is not in the cards. He’s going to need all the young players to do the heavy lifting. He can score when needed, but that’s not the role he intended when he joined the team. So it’s going to be up to Jmaes to get these guys the ball so that everyone is happy and the team is moving as one.
So while it may be a big question on how everyone will get the ball, everyone will have an impact in a different way. It’s going to come down to the offensive system and what head coach Nick Nurse creates with this new roster.
