With athleticism and defensive versatility, the veteran wing offers a dependable bridge for the Philadelphia 76ers, whether the franchise prioritizes a veteran title charge or a youthful roster reset.
The Philadelphia 76ers have bigger offseason questions than Kelly Oubre Jr., but that does not mean his situation should be overlooked.
Whether Philadelphia decides to reset around Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe or make one more run with Joel Embiid, Oubre is the type of player who still makes sense.
That is because his value is not tied to one specific roster direction. Oubre brings energy, athleticism and defensive versatility, three things the Sixers have lacked too often during recent playoff runs. He is not a star, but he is a solid starter that every team needs.
His numbers back up his usefulness. Oubre averaged 14.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals this season while shooting 46.7 percent from the field and a career-best 36 percent from three. He has been one of the few constants in Philadelphia’s lineup for the past few years, and that shouldn’t change now.
The playoff shooting was rough, with Oubre hitting only 25.6 percent from three, but he still gave the Sixers real moments. In Game 3 against the Knicks, he led Philadelphia with 22 points, eight rebounds and one assist in 36 minutes, shooting 7-for-16 from the field and 6-for-6 at the line. Even when his jumpshot is inconsistent, he still makes an impact.
If the Sixers keep Embiid, Oubre remains a strong fit as a slashing wing who can defend, cut and play off stars. Embiid and Maxey need role players who do not require heavy touches but can still punish mistakes. Oubre can do that by attacking closeouts, finishing in transition and bringing defensive physicality on the perimeter.
If the Sixers reset, the argument for keeping him still works. A young core built around Maxey and Edgecombe would need athletic veterans who can help set a competitive tone. Oubre is only 30, still productive and athletic enough to fit a faster style.
Just as important, he seems open to staying. After the season, Oubre said, “Yeah, I love it here,” while acknowledging the business side of free agency and saying he did not like how the year ended.
Philadelphia needs players who can handle the market, the pressure and the expectations. Oubre has done that. No matter which direction the Sixers choose, bringing him back should be part of the plan.
