VJ Edgecombe is off to a fantastic start in his NBA career. The rookie is a prime contributor on a 76ers team hoping to make a deep run this season. Will the Sixers be able to count on the young guard?

The Philadelphia 76ers are in the middle of a tight playoff race, as they are trying to climb up from the seventh seed and into a secure playoff position. One of the players they are counting on for this late-season push is rookie guard VJ Edgecombe. The rookie has been great so far and looks to be a future cornerstone for their franchise.

Edgecombe wasted no time making NBA history. In his NBA debut, he scored 34 points, setting a franchise record for a rookie debut. That performance immediately put the league on notice and established expectations of what he could become.

Over the course of the season, Edgecombe has backed up that early promise with consistent production. He has averaged 16.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4 assists this season, showing off a well-rounded skill set that will only improve as he gets more experience.

What stands out most when you watch Edgecombe is his rare combination of three-point volume and rim pressure. Edgecome averages 3.7 rim attempts per game, a number that places him in the 91st percentile league-wide. He combines with a reliable jumper from beyond the arc, as the rookie is shooting 36% from three on nearly six attempts a night.

The ability to stretch the defense while being a downhill threat makes him difficult to guard. Defenders are forced to choose between giving space on the perimeter and pressing up and risking getting beaten off the dribble. If Edgecombe continues to refine his finishing skills and increase his shooting efficiency, he could become one of the most dangerous offensive players in the NBA.

As the season progressed, his role expanded. Injuries to Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid opened up opportunities for the rookie, and he didn't waste them. He recorded multiple standout performances, including a 35-point outing against the Oklahoma City Thunder and a 38-point, 11-assist night against the Sacramento Kings.

However, like most rookies, Edgecombe's season hasn't been without challenges. Minor injuries have caused him to miss time and disrupt his rhythm. Additionally, there have been stretches of inconsistency as he continues to adjust to the pace and physicality of the NBA.

Still, the overall takeaway is positive. Edgecombe has exceeded the expectations put on him; his combination of athleticism, shooting, and playmaking gives the Sixers a dynamic young player to build around moving forward.

If this rookie season is any indication, Edgecombe's future is incredibly bright; his development could define the next era of basketball in Philadelphia.
