Dailyn Swain has been impressive in his junior year at Texas. If the 76ers drafted him, how would he fit into their team and future?
In a recent Bleacher Report mock draft, forward Dailyn Swain was projected as a potential selection for the Philadelphia 76ers, offering an intriguing blend of versatility, athleticism, and defensive upside.
For a 76ers team in need of two-way production, Swain could represent a strong long-term investment.
Swain's game is built on versatility. He has a good motor, plays great defense, is a very efficient scorer within the arc, and is a good connective passer. These skills would give him a path to early minutes on a roster with ball-dominant players such as Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, as he can play off of the two and still be a contributor.
Defense is the side of the ball where Swain will provide the most value. He has the size, length, and fluidity to guard multiple positions, something that is very valued in a switch-heavy NBA. Swain projects as a player who can disrupt passing lanes, contest perimeter shots, and hold his own against wings and forwards.
Offensively, Swain has some work to do. Swain shoots an efficient 54.7% from within the arc, but his 34.4% shooting from beyond the arc is something that will need to improve at the next level. His shot mechanics are also a concern, as he has a slight hitch on his jumpshot that slows down his release and allows players to contest him even when he has created space. The forward will need to work on speeding up his release so he can get his shot off comfortably.
Another adjustment will come in the role. Swain is in a Texas offense that gives him free rein to create off the dribble. In Philly, they already have their established ball handlers, so Swain would have to simplify his game to fit in. Swain's willingness to defend, rebound, hustle, and play within the flow of the offense is what will get him on the court early, not his self-creation skills.
However, the junior forward possesses significant upside. His jump shot has improved consistently every year he has been in college, from 15.4% his freshman year to a respectable 34.4% this year. If he can continue to develop his jumpshot, he could be a high-level rotation piece, as he is already a great athlete with good defensive instincts.
If Philly drafts Swain, they will be betting on their ability to develop him into a player who fits their roster. He may not be a headline grabber, but for the 76ers, he could become a player that every contender needs.
