Entering Wednesday night's contest against the Detroit Pistons, all the talk around the Milwaukee Bucks was about Giannis Antetokounmpo, and it wasn't about some record-setting performance he was putting out on the court. A report from ESPN's Shams Charania revealed that the two-time MVP and his agent were having talks with the franchise about his future in Milwaukee.
In addition to that, ESPN's Brian Windhorst revealed that a trade request had been made by Giannis prior to the season, so all eyes were on the star forward to see how he'd respond on the court. Unfortunately, he'd exit the game after just three minutes due to an injury, but the Bucks were able to pull together an impressive 113-109 upset win.
The Bucks entered Wednesday's game against the Pistons with just one win in games Giannis didn't finish healthy. Therefore, beating the top-seeded Pistons was a major accomplishment and showed what this team is capable of, especially with the strong play of Kevin Porter Jr. since his return from injury.
After the game, veteran forward Bobby Portis addressed the impact Giannis brings to the team, after he pulled together a 13-point, nine-rebound performance in the win.
"I think when it first happens, it kind of sucks the air out of the team. It kind of sucks the energy out the building, especially just a polarizing player like Giannis affects the game in so many ways," Portis said. "The things that he does for our team is like crazy..."
Portis added the Giannis text in the Bucks team group message right after the game, congratulating the team on the resilient win.
According to ESPN, Giannis will be sidelined for approximately two to four weeks with the right calf strain he suffered against the Pistons.
While defeating the Pistons without Giannis is a positive for the Bucks, what matters is stringing together multiple wins in his absence. The Bucks beat the Warriors earlier in the season without Giannis, but then continued to lose all their subsequent games without him.
As mentioned, the return of Porter Jr. will help the offense significantly in Giannis' absence, as he's averaging 28 points per game over his past two games. However, it will need to be a collective effort, with Ryan Rollins, Kyle Kuzma, Myles Turner, and Portis all stepping up as well.
There's no telling how long Giannis will be out exactly, but with tough contests against the Pistons, Boston Celtics, and Toronto Raptors on the horizon, it could provide more clarity for Giannis as he mulls his future over in Milwaukee.
