The Bucks were just surprised by the Doc Rivers firing as everyone else.

The Milwaukee Bucks crashed and burned throughout the season and clearly, most of the responsibility for the team's poor performance fell on former head coach Doc Rivers' shoulders.

Milwaukee finished 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 32-50 record and beyond just the record, the season was marred by drama around Giannis Antetokounmpo.

First because it was up in the air whether or not he would request a trade at the deadline, though he ultimately stayed, and then later because of a public breakdown in communication between Antetokounmpo and the Bucks over his playing time after recovering from a hyperextended knee as the Bucks refused to reactivate him to play.

Throughout all of the Bucks' failures this season, Rivers was the face. He addressed every press conference after a loss and even snipped back at Antetokounmpo for speaking to the media about his frustrations over playing time.

Sudden News

Milwaukee leadership didn't waste time once the season was finished and announced that Rivers would be leaving the Bucks just after the last game of the season.

It seems like the news came as suddenly to the Bucks players as it did to the rest of the basketball world. Bobby Portis appeared on FanDuel's Run It Back show on Tuesday and said that he found out about Rivers' departure while he was on the bus to leave the stadium.

"About five minutes on the bus, the news came through," Portis said (via Legion Hoops). "It was very shocking that it happened so fast... I don't even know where he [Rivers] was at. It was just kind of awkward. Obviously the season has been up and down... most of the time things happen the next day or a couple days after that."

A coach leaving that quickly, especially with no notice to the rest of the team, isn't a sign of a well-functioning franchise. But, the way that Milwaukee's season went isn't a sign of one either.

Shaky Leadership

Rivers didn't exactly have it easy leading the Bucks this season, especially with Antetokounmpo missing 46 games this season, but he didn't do much to turn the season either.

One of Rivers' most notable gaffs in leadership came with just a few games left in the season, when he was trying to motivate team by telling them to look up his coaching resume and went on to say that he led teams to the playoffs and championships that "weren't supposed to." It was a statement that reportedly did not go over well.

The Bucks are in head coach limbo now and it remains to be seen if whoever team leadership finds to replace Rivers will be able to do what he couldn't.
