Will double bigs help the Milwaukee Bucks?

The Milwaukee Bucks did a little experimentation on Wednesday in their preseason game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

With Kyle Kuzma sitting after struggling in Milwaukee’s first preseason game, the Bucks went with a starting frontcourt of Kel’el Ware and Myles Turner.

Ware was acquired as part of the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade with the idea that he would back up Turner at the center position.

Instead, the Bucks decided to pivot in this preseason contest, playing Turner and Ware together to go double big, an option the Thunder use when they have a healthy crop of frontcourt players.

While the double big lineup is still a work in progress, there were some positive signs.

Turner’s Spacing

If you’re playing two bigs on the floor, one of them has to provide proper spacing outside of the three-point line.

Turner is one of the better shooting bigs from deep, and Ware has shown that he has a touch from outside, though his volume has been limited.

Turner shot 2-for-4 from three against the Thunder; Ware went 0-for-4. While Turner would likely spend more time on the outside in the double big lineup, the fact that Milwaukee can switch them and give teams a different look could open up new possibilities on the offensive end of the court.

Better Rebounding And Rim Protection

Despite being a center, Turner is not a strong rebounder. Ware, on the other hand, is a good rebounder and will help end possessions for Milwaukee. Having both players on the floor will make it tougher for the opposition to extend or get extra possessions.

While Turner is one of the better shot blockers in the league, Ware is also great at protecting the rim. The combination will ensure that everything gets challenged at the rim.

Kuzma Off The Bench

Perhaps the biggest argument for Ware in the starting lineup is that it’ll bring Kuzma coming off the bench. Kuzma has not played well during his Milwaukee tenure, and his first preseason game, where he shot 0-for-6, wasn’t very encouraging.

Coming off the bench could benefit the starters, as Ware and Turner don’t need the shot opportunities that Kuzma does, leading to more creation and shots for Tyler Herro and Ryan Rollins.

It could also benefit Kuzma, as coming off the bench would allow him to get into a rhythm without having to worry about Herro or Rollins creating or getting their offense going.
