Will the Milwaukee Bucks regret waiving Kevin Porter Jr.?

With the Milwaukee Bucks needing to cut down their roster, they made the decision to waive Kevin Porter Jr.

Porter Jr. spent most of last season as the starting guard for Milwaukee, starting in 36 of 38 games. He averaged 17.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 7.4 assists on 46% shooting and 32% from three.

Doc Rivers showed trust in KPJ throughout the season as he led the offense for long stretches with Giannis Antetokounmpo out for the majority of the season.

After trading Giannis and having two lottery picks, the Bucks rosters became overstocked in the offseason and they made the decision to cut ties with Porter Jr. after two seasons.

A Bad Decision?

The last roster spot seemed to come down to Porter Jr. and Jericho Sims, who was rumored to be traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Dalton Knecht, whom the Lakers ultimately waived, and a second-round pick.

The Bucks seemed to think that they are better at the guard position than they are in their frontcourt, which is a valid reason when you look at their roster.

At center, they have Kel’el Ware and Myles Turner. Jericho Sims is a solid third option in case one of them goes down.

At the guard spot, Ryan Rollins will be handling the majority of the offense, but the team acquired Tyler Herro, who is more than comfortable with the ball in his hands. They also got Jaime Jaquez Jr who they can run offense through, and Caris LeVert, who is no stranger to handling the ball.

It’s a positive sign for Kasparas Jakucionis as well, as he will be tasked with point guard minutes with Porter Jr. not on the team.

The Right Decision

With the Bucks adding extra ball-handling during the offseason, the need for Porter Jr. lessened. That would’ve reduced his role to a spacer or someone who can attack off the dribble. He’s not a good three-point shooter, and while he can attack off the dribble, his defensive deficiencies were too much to overcome to justify keeping him on the roster.

Porter Jr. might find a home elsewhere as some teams are still starving for an offensive generator and are willing to overlook his past.

For the Bucks, they wanted to continue their youth movement, and while Porter Jr. isn’t old, they have younger talent like Brayden Burries, Jakucionis, Rollins, and even Nate Ament waiting in the wings to run the show.
